Celebrate an Amazing Occasion with Cake or Death

Leopard Louboutin Cake

Most birthdays these days seem to end up being celebrated over the moderate-at-best ice cream cakes that are churned out without any original thought or design. Why not celebrate your loved one’s next birthday over a custom-made Leopard Louboutin-shaped or Griffin Guitar (below) cake from Cake or Death?

Griffin Guitar

We’re happy to announce that Cake or Death is donating a gift certificate for $500 toward the purchase of one custom sculpted cake for any occasion! This includes a design session with the cake artist and delivery within the GTA (some conditions apply).

Cake or Death offers custom sculpted cakes ‘to die for.’ Each work of edible art is custom-created and focuses on details, quality and originality. Thanks very much to them for their generous donation to SpinTO and the Toronto People with AIDS Foundation! Check out more of Cake or Death’s creations after the jump.

Raleigh Coasting Bike

Thanks to Raleigh Canada, we’re adding a second bike to the growing raffle pool that you’ll have a chance to walk away with at SpinTO! Last week we announced a Specialized Globe Centrum brought to you by Silver Sponsor Cycle Solutions so it’s great to see another bike up for grabs.

This beautiful city bike is perfect for Toronto’s busy streets with the front rack nicely suited for a pannier for trucking around a light load of groceries. So how do you get your hands on this sweet looking bike? Get tickets for SpinTO on May 15 at the Mod Club to get in on the raffle! With reduced ticket prices at just $10 thanks to an amazing rally by Toronto’s tech community, now’s the time for you and your friends to start your weekend off on the right foot at SpinTO!

Toronto’s tech community steps up!

May 10 2009 Comments Off

Once again, Toronto’s technology community has shown how social technology can create change and make our community a better place.

Thanks to a recent flurry of donations over Twitter, we are able to make the SpinTO event even more accessible to all by reducing the ticket price for admission to only $10, while they last!

Last Thursday evening, Microsoft developer evangelist and Toronto BarCamp orginator David Crow donated $500 personally to the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation through our SpinTO project, and he issued a challenge via Twitter:

Twitter / David Crow: I just made my donation to ...

David’s challenge was quickly taken up in the Toronto tech Twittersphere by Mesh web conference partners Mathew Ingram, Rob Hyndman, Mike McDerment, Stuart MacDonald and Mark Evans with their own donation. Not to be outdone or left out of the fun, Idée Inc. CEO and long-time HIV/AIDS advocate Leila Boujnane met the challenge, as did David Suydam of Architech Solutions and Jaimie MacPherson of Mischief Media.

All told, within a few hours in one evening this community raised over $3,000 to help men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS through the work of the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation. Their commitment reflects the importance these people place on social responsibility and community.

A Party For All and All For a Party!

Disco!

It’s only a week and a half until the May 15th launch party for SpinTO, and, while there is still much left to do, we wanted to update everyone on all the great stuff that’s been planned. For the past two months, a team of volunteers have been working hard to prepare a night of music, entertainment, and camaraderie.

It’s been an important goal to create something that honours the great work of the Friends for Life Bike Rally and the Toronto People with AIDS Foundation. We’ve had tremendous community support, from our great sponsors to the artists who have stepped up to contribute the design, music, art, and video you’ll see on this site and at the event itself.

Today, our news release goes out across the nation thanks to sponsor CNW and we’re excited to get the opportunity to continue raising awareness about the Bike Rally and the dedicated participants who make the journey from Toronto to Montreal in just six days. In addition, we’re pleased to announce Torontoist, Spacing, and I Want I Got have come aboard as media sponsors!

Dancing!

What can you expect at the Mod Club next Friday for the launch party?

Doors will open for the launch party at 8 pm sharp. SpinTO was inspired by the idea of communities coming together, so the night starts with a chance for guests to meet and mingle. Attendees can expect a complimentary glass of bubbly from our friends at Hardy’s upon arrival! We’ll be toasting the Bike Rally riders and running the raffle and silent auctions, which includes great prizes like a Specialized bike from Cycle Solutions, custom jewellery from the Fair Trade Jewellery Company, artwork from tinku gallery and more!

Entertainment will follow, around 10 pm, with live performances by two critically-lauded burlesque acts who have performed around the world. We are thrilled to showcase the breathtaking men of BoylesqueTO and the stunning ladies and gent of Skin Tight Outta Sight.

Finally, at midnight, the party shifts into full dancing mode. We’ve got great local DJs ready to get you moving including DJ Abdul Smooth, DJ DaSilva and DJ Ryanah Taylor, accompanied by some of the best dancers in the city to fully capture the Solid Gold theme for SpinTO. How late the night goes will depend on you!

If you haven’t got your ticket yet, now’s the time to pick one up. If you have, let a friend know and bring them along! Of course, we’re just teasing you with just a portion of what has been planned. As we’ve been warning, expect the unexpected.

BoylesqueTO & Skin Tight Outta Sight to Perform at SpinTO

BoylesqueTO

We’ve been dropping hints about this on Twitter for a little while now, but we’re very excited to officially announce Toronto’s premier burlesque troupes, BoylesqueTO and Skin Tight Outta Sight will both be performing live at SpinTO on May 15!

I first gave Toronto a look at BoylesqueTO when I wrote for blogTO almost a year ago when I proclaimed, “I’m not going to argue against guys taken their clothes off for a good time,” and you know what? That hasn’t changed a bit. Since then they’ve performed all over the city and have made quite the name for themselves. Keep an eye out for a special bike-themed performance at SpinTO!

Skin Tight Outta Sight

Skin Tight Outta Sight Rebel Burlesque are some of Canada’s best and are renowned as pioneer in the country’s Burlesque revival. They’ve been performing for nine years, sport over a hundred different performances and have been covered by just about every media publication in the city. We can’t wait to have them show their stuff for you all on May 15! Get your tickets now to see both of these acts at SpinTO!
