Toronto’s tech community steps up!
Once again, Toronto’s technology community has shown how social technology can create change and make our community a better place.
Thanks to a recent flurry of donations over Twitter, we are able to make the SpinTO event even more accessible to all by reducing the ticket price for admission to only $10, while they last!
Last Thursday evening, Microsoft developer evangelist and Toronto BarCamp orginator David Crow donated $500 personally to the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation through our SpinTO project, and he issued a challenge via Twitter:
David’s challenge was quickly taken up in the Toronto tech Twittersphere by Mesh web conference partners Mathew Ingram, Rob Hyndman, Mike McDerment, Stuart MacDonald and Mark Evans with their own donation. Not to be outdone or left out of the fun, Idée Inc. CEO and long-time HIV/AIDS advocate Leila Boujnane met the challenge, as did David Suydam of Architech Solutions and Jaimie MacPherson of Mischief Media.
All told, within a few hours in one evening this community raised over $3,000 to help men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS through the work of the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation. Their commitment reflects the importance these people place on social responsibility and community.
A Party For All and All For a Party!

It’s only a week and a half until the May 15th launch party for SpinTO, and, while there is still much left to do, we wanted to update everyone on all the great stuff that’s been planned. For the past two months, a team of volunteers have been working hard to prepare a night of music, entertainment, and camaraderie.
It’s been an important goal to create something that honours the great work of the Friends for Life Bike Rally and the Toronto People with AIDS Foundation. We’ve had tremendous community support, from our great sponsors to the artists who have stepped up to contribute the design, music, art, and video you’ll see on this site and at the event itself.
Today, our news release goes out across the nation thanks to sponsor CNW and we’re excited to get the opportunity to continue raising awareness about the Bike Rally and the dedicated participants who make the journey from Toronto to Montreal in just six days. In addition, we’re pleased to announce Torontoist, Spacing, and I Want I Got have come aboard as media sponsors!

What can you expect at the Mod Club next Friday for the launch party?
Doors will open for the launch party at 8 pm sharp. SpinTO was inspired by the idea of communities coming together, so the night starts with a chance for guests to meet and mingle. Attendees can expect a complimentary glass of bubbly from our friends at Hardy’s upon arrival! We’ll be toasting the Bike Rally riders and running the raffle and silent auctions, which includes great prizes like a Specialized bike from Cycle Solutions, custom jewellery from the Fair Trade Jewellery Company, artwork from tinku gallery and more!
Entertainment will follow, around 10 pm, with live performances by two critically-lauded burlesque acts who have performed around the world. We are thrilled to showcase the breathtaking men of BoylesqueTO and the stunning ladies and gent of Skin Tight Outta Sight.
Finally, at midnight, the party shifts into full dancing mode. We’ve got great local DJs ready to get you moving including DJ Abdul Smooth, DJ DaSilva and DJ Ryanah Taylor, accompanied by some of the best dancers in the city to fully capture the Solid Gold theme for SpinTO. How late the night goes will depend on you!
If you haven’t got your ticket yet, now’s the time to pick one up. If you have, let a friend know and bring them along! Of course, we’re just teasing you with just a portion of what has been planned. As we’ve been warning, expect the unexpected.
